Things Bryan Fuller shared while live tweeting American Gods, Week 2:
Q: What was the best thing about working with Gillian Anderson again and watching her bring all these icons to life?
B: SHE ALWAYS SURPRISESQ: why 8 Eps per season? Is that a Starz number?
B: Nope, it’s a “we’re over budget and if we cut an episode or two we will be less over budget” sort of number.Q: which form of Media was ur favourite to shoot? I personally can’t wait 4 Marilyn and Bowie. It’s gonna kill me
B: LUCY, BUT I LOVE THEM ALLQ: we gonna see her in different forms of other iconic characters on season 2?
B: OHYES, AND WE’D LOVE TO TELL A MEDIA ORIGIN STORYQ: Who’s more of a perfectionist, Bryan Fuller or Michael Green
B: THEY’RE BOTH HORRIBLE TASK MASTERSQ: Can we expect Jewish entities (golem, dybbuk)? (Or perhaps that’s secret)
B: YESQ: Any costumes you’d have made for you from the show?
B: YES. Gillian Anderson’s BOWIE COSTUME.Q: When do we get to see @KChenoweth in this season? I got a friend who’s impatient
B: EPISODE 8Q: aw your admiration for Gillian is so cute, is there any other roles you’d wish to write for her in the future?
B: MANYQ: Bryan can you tease a little about what’s in store for us when Media appears as Bowie?
B: BOWIE LYRICS RE-IMAGINED AS DIALOGUEQ: when did you first fall in love with Gillian Anderson?
B: I admired her work since X-Files, but was first wowed by her over a dinner where she was authentic and lovely and bright.Q: Do you have any of the same writing team working on #AmericanGods as on @NBCHannibal? I love the casting crossovers!
B: NOT YETQ: What has been your favorite scene to film so far in the series? I’m so excited for so many scenes
B: Gillian Anderson AS LUCYQ: For everyone. What’s one of your favorite things about the book vs favorite thing about the series?
B: FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE BOOK: @neilhimself’s ENDLESS IMAGINATION, FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE SHOW: THE CASTQ: Any idea of approximately when s2 would begin filming?
B: EARLY 2018Q: Are you creating more gods that weren’t in the novel?
B: Yes! More to come in Season 2!Q: when will I get to start shipping media and Easter
B: We’d love to get them both on the show!Week 1, HERE
Already someone theorising that ‘Bryan or his handler likely didn’t know the implications of what they were tweeting’. I’m confused as to the assumption that he is a/blind and b/somehow intellectually challenged enough to just retweet without thought. If it fits certain agendas of course.
This fandom need to stop disrespecting other celebs because what they say doesn’t fit with their beliefs. Orlando Jones is getting shit on Twitter just because he wants to be funny and entertain us, it’s not his fault if people take everything he says for granted. Son now, let’s not start to question Bryan Fuller’s intelligence. He has mastered the art of social media a long time ago. He knows very well what he did.
As I see it this retweet Bryan Fuller has made is either because -GA is with PM and he does not like it? – because he is shipping GA and DD? -or because he knows GA and DD are together and want to tease them about it or perhaps want them to be public about it? I want the last to be right!
It’s simple, Fuller knows Gillian. They’re friends. As much as we don’t know if she knows Orlando Jones for real, we do know Fuller and Gillian know each other very well. He also has spent a whole night at a table with Gillian and PM, and a whole night last year with both David and Gillian. I think he does know the status of their relationship. So even if he doesn’t like PM, which is possible, I think out of respect and care for Gillian, he wouldn’t have retweeted that if he knew it could hurt her. PM is very respected in this industry, his show is a big one, he’s winning all the awards, so I don’t think Fuller would risk to upset him either. It means you can scratch the first option.
Which leaves you with the last two, and now, it’s up to you…
Bryan Fuller: We knew very early on that Gillian had to be part of this show and we wanted to see her like we had never seen her before. Since she had already done a photo series where she was portraying Lucy Ricardo, we had that image in our mind, so it was a very short step to casting her as Media, whose first incarnation in the book is as Lucy Ricardo. We called Gillian and told her what we had in mind for the character and how the character was going to manifest as a different dead celebrity every time we saw her; that it would give her an opportunity to create a hybridization of the Media character and the personality of the dead celebrity, and she was instantly on board. She’s a big fan of Neil Gaiman’s and we had a lot of fun working together on Hannibal.
She surprised us every time she took on one of these characters and inhabited their personality, but still maintained who she was as Media. I think Marilyn Monroe was the biggest transformation. She does Lucy Ricardo, David Bowie, Marilyn Monroe, and Judy Garland. She does, in one episode, David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe. We need to submit that to the Emmys. (X)
