Yes, that’s basically what he said. He said that he’d rather not share anything so that people would be surprised when they see the episode. Mitch said that he quit social media, which David applauded. He said he was old school, but he doesn’t understand why people are interested in BTS. I’m paraphrasing, but that’s pretty much what he said. Which I couldn’t disagree more and I find kind of crazy to have this kind of discourse in 2018.
People wanting to see behind the scenes is not a new phenomenon. It’s just that before the internet and social media, it was all print and video specials and whatnot.
There hasn’t been a change in people’s desire to see behind the scenes. The only difference is that before he wasn’t responsible for producing any of the BTS content and now he is. He just can’t be fucking bothered.
I’m going to kind of. Yea not necessarily agree with David and Mitch. per se? But the the whole Instagram/Twitter bts we get now has us kind of spoiled. We got in the the past, (I’m an old timer) but in the form of print media, like TV Guide and the like. Yes it’s important and yes it perks interest. But the actors weren’t responsible for providing it in real time like they are today. I don’t really feel like it should be on the actors of any show to provide that to us, they have press for that. And the whole reason for it from the start was to keep interest peaked during hiatus or breaks between arc seasons. The insta/Twitter stuff now is neat and cute at times, but it also causes a lot of speculation too. And misinterpretation. I’m honestly kind of over it. Like yeah, you’re at work. Cool cool. But 🤷🏻♀️it doesn’t make me want to watch or not watch a show. I miss the days of knowing very little. Honestly I do. I just need the writers/directors/ *cough* CREATORS/ actors of a show to do their job and do it well. I can wait for the bts. It doesn’t need to come from them. And if they don’t enjoy documenting it? Fine by me. Wasn’t their job in the first place. But social media and this whole instant, right now, gimme gimme everything now culture demands it. But speaking as old fan, I get why it would annoy them to feel as if they now owe it to fans. They don’t.
This isn’t the 1990s. You can’t fail or refuse to adapt to societal changes. You wouldn’t walk around without a cell phone or a credit card or access to a computer. You can’t go looking for a payphone with your bartering ox while on your way to mail a handwritten letter and not expect people to find that odd. That’s simply not how the world works now.
Whether he likes it or not, social media plays a prominent role in modern society. If he wants to be in this industry, he has to be willing to play the game. And if he’s unwilling, there are plenty of celebrities, for example, Téa, who don’t have social media accounts or who only have accounts that their teams use. And that’s totally fine. He can’t have social media, but then be disgruntled when people expect him to use it the way modern celebrities do.
But the thing is, he needs it. If he wants to successfully hawk his merchandise or his middle aged rock star fantasy, he has to be willing to use social media draw people in with other (most X-Files) content. Let face it, people aren’t going to his concerts or buying his books because they’ve never seen the X-Files (or Californication) and just really love his music and his writing.
As for it “not being his job”, press and promotion is absolutely part of his job, and social media is a huge part of modern press and promotion. If he started refusing to do interviews or attend promotional events and photoshoots, people would have a problem with that.
Traditional media is dying. Traditional press that was successful back in the day isn’t enough now. The media landscape is so entirely different. Doing a TV guide photoshoot and interview isn’t going to drive the kind of attention towards him and towards the show as it used it. The amount of media available for viewers to choose from has skyrocketed. As such, viewers have to be courted and convinced that they should watch this show over another. And a big part of that is social media.
The Internet has played a very large, historical role in the success of the show from the very beginning, and yes, the expectations for the way actors interact with fans on the Internet has undoubtedly changed, but that’s just how it is. To admit to being uncomfortable and unfamiliar with social media is one thing; to call it “BS” and say you don’t see the appeal of it is entirely ridiculous and out of touch.
As far as being “over it“, no one is forcing you to consume that content. If you want less like it used to be, you can very easily have that. That’s not to say that social media is all good and the expectation and overconsumption of content isn’t necessarily a problem of modern society. It certainly can be, but the negative effects of speculation and misinterpretation is on you.
Reblog because @realmofextremepossibility voiced my thoughts so well! Than you!
He did share one or two pics but Gillian was the one who shared 90% of the BTS of the last season and I’m very grateful for that. What David forgets is that the pictures she shared were the ONLY promotion we got for this season. There was nothing else, and I’m not going to count the few late shows he did and used to promote his album (or The Bachelor). So I understand his old school point of view but I wish he would put things in perspective and realize that sharing BTS with the fans to create a connection, to tease and entertain doesn’t equal spoilers. Fox released spoilers weeks after weeks. Gillian just enjoyed herself and I still wish he would have participated.
yeah… Kinda ironical when your girlfriend if documenting your life on Instagram, right?

Leads David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are of course back on the Emmy ballot as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Duchovny previously earned two nominations (1997-98) for the original run of “The X-Files,” while Anderson received four bids (1996-99) and won the 1998 Emmy for Best Drama Actress. This time around they’re joined by three of this season’s standout guest stars: Karin Konoval (“Plus One”), Haley Joel Osment(“Kitten”) and Fiona Vroom (“Nothing Lasts Forever”).
