David Duchovny – Hell or Highwater Extended Videoclip (X)

To celebrate one week of Every Third Thought we are sharing a special acoustic video of David performing Hell or Highwater, originally recorded for this years Love-a-thon, we have added exclusive in-studio BTS clips from the making of ETT! (Special thanks to Pat McCusker, Colin Lee, Nasr A., And Atomic Sound!)

Additionally! We are adding a new item to the store this week. David’s first album, Hell or Highwater, is now available on CD for a limited time only!

I think he’s telling the truth when he claims his music isn’t about him or anyone specific. I think we hear is a mix of his feelings at that time, when an important time was ending. But I also recognise elements which can be related to his feelings about GA. They’re always very dubious and conflicting about those feelings. I think their suddenly reconection at the same time his marriage was in crisis must has influenced his poetry. To me HOH is a mix. Not about anyone but about everything.

This last sentence is beautiful and probably very accurate too.

Do you think « someone else’s girl » is about Gillian? I get that feeling. Do u know when it was written?

I’m mixed on David’s songs being about Gillian. Part of me wants it to be, of course, but the rational part of me know they probably aren’t. David said many times that his songs are not about someone in particular, which is not totally true in my opinion because I think “Hell or Highwater” was mostly about Tea as he wrote all the songs around the time they separated and the lyrics are clearly about a separation and about missing the one you loved.

It seems like “someone else’s girl” was also written at that time. He said he had written many songs and didn’t put them all in his album, and I think this one is one of them.
I know a few lyrics could fit his history with Gillian, but basically like every love song.

I look forward to hear his new album, though, because I think the songs in it will be more recently written, and inspired by someone else … 🙂
