Hey sweetie. Love your blog, of course. I’ve looked everywhere, and I know you know where to find this. I’m looking for a post that breaks down David’s song Hell or Highwater as being about Gillian. A fellow Gillovniac asked me about the song (b/c she noticed it too) and I’m like, yeah babe, there’s a post, but for the life of me, I can’t find it. Can you help? Cheers, and thank you for being you! <3

Hey! First of all, thank  you very much! And then, I’m really sorry, I searched for that post and came up with nothing. I think I’ve seen it somewhere, but I’m unable to remember where. Maybe someone else can help.

I only found something about The Rain Song which is most likely for Tea, and to be honest, I also think Hell or Highwater is about Tea.  David always said his songs aren’t autobiographic, and he’d never said he had written them for someone in particular. What he said, though, is that he’d written them five years ago (and he said so one or two years ago), which fits with the time he went through separation with Tea. I think this album is mostly about that.

Check this interview, around 10min40 he explains what Hell or Highwater is about, and he says, “it’s about when you make a promise of love to you sp…” and almost says the word “spouse” before he stops and changes into to your “lover”. This glitch is pretty telling for me.
