Dear anon, it was I who informed @justholdinghandsok that they saw Stephen Daldry on Saturday and unlike you, I didnât do so on anon. I have absolutely nothing to gain by lying but just to clarify, I was there, along with @crossedbeams @mulderswaterbed and @dangerscully. It absolutely is possible to recognise him and we did. Not only is he a well known and well respected director in the UK, one of us attended a Bafta screening of the first episode of The Crown which included a Q&A afterwards with Stephen, Peter and Suzanne Mackie. The rest of us have all watched The Crown and have seen interviews and panels promoting the show that included Stephen (letâs be honest here, many of us have watched promo stuff related to the show, especially given Gillianâs own interest in it). We recognised him.
If I was going to make shit up and was vindictive enough to do so, as some bloggers on tumblr feel inclined to do, believe me, I would have made up something far more salacious or spiral worthy – I would have said that iâd spotted Peter himself, maybe Gillian too. But I am not a liar and again, i think there is enough made up stories floating around on tumblr.
As far as what Stephen was doing, who knows. Was filming taking place? Was he scouting for locations? Was secondary photography being done for the show? Is his office nearby and he fancied a break? I have no idea and made no claims to know for certain. What I did do was reply to the selfie photo that was posted, said who he was and that âperhaps filming was occurring.â Stephen was standing yards away from St Jamesâ Palace (which was roadside to the march), watching everyone go by. Gillian may very well have known that people she knew were going to be there and kept an eye out, or maybe it was a random serendipitous moment as it was for us.
As far as Gillian being in a VIP section and therefore not being able to spot him – the march was divided up into categories – people who identified as disabled went first, then children, then the rest of the march followed. I imagine that as Gillian was wearing a lanyard, there was also a section for recognisable faces and those who were scheduled to speak at the rally once the march reached Trafalgar Sq. She still walked exactly the same route as the rest of us and 100% would have passed the exact spot where Stephen was standing.Â
I feel ridiculous for posting such an essay in response to this but felt compelled to do so. There is a growing culture on tumblr to believe blindly in things that many anons say and dispute and disregard the things said by people who do not hide behind a grey face.
That needed to be clarified. Thanks!
