I’m a new fan, I started lurking on Tumblr, and I saw you always say Twitter is bad but I’m curious so I went on DD’s tag and it’s so weird. It’s like they know a different from the one I know through you and other bloggers. It made me question him and who he really is if his own fandom can’t agree on who he is. I hope I make sense.

You’re totally making sense, anon, and I agree with you. There’s only one David, but I also feel like people in his fandom have different opinions and views on who he really is. I think it comes from the fact he has been doing two very different shows. The XF fans who know him for a long time, who have seen him grow and become who he is today have a certain opinion on who David is. I tend to think like we are closer to the truth, even if none of us are able to know the real David, of course.
But there’s also this other part of his fandom, who discovered him with Californication. And for some reason, some of these people (not everyone!) are not able to make a difference between reality and fiction. There’s certain dudes in particular, who are all like “Hank Moody is so me!” (Duh!) and stick to the rumors which have been surrounding David’s private life when he was filming. I guess the headlines in the press at this time didn’t help people to understand he was not Hank Moody for real. So now there’s a small part of his fandom screaming “motherfuckaah” at his concerts and panels, some dudes who want to be David Duchovny because they think he’s Hank Moody and haven’t dig deeper to find out who he really is, they idealize him in their own way to make him stick to their fantaisie of who they want to be, and if they only knew that David keep seeing Californication as a comedy and a beautiful love story, they would be disappointed.
In other words, David is an adorable and genuine father of two, smart even brilliant, who in my opinion is far from being a pot smoker fucking every pussy on his way, but what do I know!
Also, I love Californication!
