She took a deep breath as soon as she was out of the ballroom. Her unsteady hands searched her purse for her cell phone. She found it and called David. ‘Pick up the phone, David’, she mumbled impatiently waiting. He didn’t, though. A moment later Peter appeared by her side. “Are you coming back inside?” His voice wasn’t angry; it was decisively gentle. “No.” She answered much more harshly than she intended. It was over, finally over. “I’m flying back.” “Gillian please consider…” 2
“No Peter. Not this time. This time I’m leaving. It was never supposed to go on this long. I did this as a favor to you but I… I cannot do it anymore.” He tried to keep the disappointment off his face as well as his anger. He was a gentleman after all and they did not show their emotions, not in a room full of people. He was, Gillian knew so, a sore loser too. Her phone blinked reflecting the colors on her rainbow clutch. Without looking she knew it would be David calling her. “Excuse me.” 3
She told Peter and cleared her throat; cleared herself of his persona. “Hey babe.” She said into the phone as tears sprang to her eyes. “No, I’m just about to leave. I’ll be back soon.” She looked at Peter who stuffed his hands into his pockets. He had lost so much more than an award tonight and she did feel a sting of hurt; she liked this man. Just not enough to go on like this. There was another man, one she loved. “Yeah, I’m coming back.” She told her man, David, her eyes on Peter. 4
He nodded, turned around and left. Gillian was free. THE END Sorry I had to share! Let’s all Gillovny on.
