Actually, I do think she’s doing a good job. It all depends on how you receive the message and who you are. If you’re a hardcore fan like we all are here. You do have an opinion on Gillian, and on her relationship with PM. Tumblr is a small, very active but small, part of her fandom so it doesn’t represent her audience at all. Twitter is another bubble. It’s bigger, but there again, everyone who actually engaged on her tweets either in a positive or negative way are hardcore fans. We’re all are biased, we have an opinion already, and tbh, we don’t have that much of an importance. Gillian has 600 000 followers on Twitter, and barely 3000 reacted to her tweet. So yes, it was mostly negative, but it’s also 597 000 people who either don’t care or just took it as a reminder for The Crown season 2 happening soon. She probably added a few thousands of views on the trailer on YouTube, which is what they wanted in the end.
We tend to forget that not everyone cares about Gillian’s personal life. Most people have no idea she’s dating the creator of the show and that’s why she’s linked to it. They don’t care. They like Gillian, they like The Crown, they like that Gillian likes The Crown and that’s it.
I think it shows even more on Facebook, where people can’t hide behind a pseudonym and where the fandom is less active. Go read the comments there, it’s mostly positive, no one is mentioning PM and people are just cheering up for the return of The Crown.
I’m sure this show would do well without her, but she isn’t damaging its image. Only hers.
