That’s really not how I took his “we’ll see what happens”. In the context, I took it as “we’ll see what happens, Gillian can still change her mind later.” To me, it was clear that he didn’t 100% believe she’s completely done and there’s still hope she would agree on doing more.
So David thinks TXF wouldn’t be the same without Scully, but « We’ll see what happens » indicates he’s thinking about doing the show without her (if he gets the chance, which I doubt because: ratings). And if he admits the show won’t be the same without her, why would he want to continue with it?
