I completely support having more women writing for The X-Files and think it’s appalling how few women have written or directed episodes historically. I also have concerns over the lack of experience of many tapped to pen episodes for Season 11 and would absolutely bet Chris Carter deliberately decided against more seasoned professionals specifically to avoid being told “no”. He likes to call the shots, has little self-awareness about his shortcomings, and has repeatedly demonstrated that he will deflect criticism of his writing onto everything but himself.

Additionally, I am disgusted at the venom directed at David Duchovny both here and on Twitter for not publicly criticizing Carter. Expecting Duchovny to call him out on social media demonstrates juvenile thinking in terms of how adults with a personal and professional relationship should communicate with one another. I’d like to remind you that Duchovny and Carter have known each other longer than many of you here have been alive and they are friends. If Duchovny wants to communicate with Carter on the subject of diversity or anything else for that matter, he is going be an adult, a friend, and a professional, and he’s going to pick up the phone or have a conversation face to face. He is not going to make statements to a tabloid or in 144 characters that question or criticize his friend and someone with whom he will be working very closely in the near future. That’s because in addition to the aforementioned reasons, Duchovny is a class act and not someone who seeks out attention through controversy.

Duchovny has more than proven himself to be a thoughtful, stand up guy who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. But he has also learned through experience the value of demonstrating appropriate boundaries in relation to what he says to the media regarding his colleagues, friends, and family. Given how many armchair critics here can’t even come off anon to tell something they disagree with them, to suggest that he should publicly blast a friend is completely immature and hypocritical.
